Here's my journey with face yoga.
Couple of years ago, I asked a dermatologist about botox injections to get some relief from my life-long nocturnal teeth grinding.
He examined my face, huffed, and said that the treatment would result in me getting jowls. He explained why, and proposed some other cosmetic strategies to minimize my future jowls.
I was baffled by his concern with my jowls over the integrity of my mouth and my life quality. I decided to forget about botox.
Closer to my 50th birthday, I noticed the age-related changes in my face have accelerated. Most mornings, I would gasp seeing my face in the mirror, hating that I looked more like my mother each day. The jowls did not terrify me, but the changes around my eyes, my favourite feature, were quite dramatic and fast.
Wanting some control over this "aging thing", I started following various beauty influencers, many of them too young to have earned wrinkles of their own. They often framed the natural aging changes as "problem areas" that needed to be fixed. I was not interested in learning from someone who saw my natural, life-earned face as a problem area.
I started educating myself about face exercise, trying out different approaches, eventually becoming a face yoga instructor. During that time I discovered that so much information that's "out there" is actually harmful, not suitable for older skin, and likely causing more sagging and damage.
To my surprise, not only did I start accepting my aging face, but I started loving it! I WANTED to nurture it and take care of it, not because I should or needed to, but because I wanted to honour it, and give it the love it deserved.
This is what keeps me coming back! That, and an ability to access beautiful relaxation. We hold in our faces a tremendous amount of tension, and releasing just a fraction of it feels... divine!
It feels good to smile spontaneously to my reflection in the mirror!
It feels super good to wake up without pain in my teeth and jaw, because I don't grind my teeth so badly anymore.
My jowls? Definitely NOT more noticeable than at that dr's appointment way back when.
That feels GOOD!

The face yoga was not at all as expected. I thought we would be doing yoga poses like the lion's roar. But this was very relaxing, and the process of stroking and loving my face as if I were my child. After this, the Kirtan chanting was very relaxing and soothing.
